{"id":1678,"date":"2025-07-16T20:58:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T20:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2025-07-16T20:58:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T20:58:53","slug":"rogue-landlord-fined-nearly-20k-for-unlicensed-hmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=1678","title":{"rendered":"Rogue landlord fined nearly \u00a320k for unlicensed HMO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rogue landlord has been fined a total of \u00a319,975 for operating an unlicensed House in Multiple Occupation in Haringey.<\/p>\n<p>A licence application was eventually submitted by the owner but only granted for one year rather than the usual five due to the infraction.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Sarah Williams, cabinet member for housing and planning and deputy leader of the Council, said: Landlords who knowingly breach licensing laws will not get away with it\u2014we\u2019re taking firm action, and the consequences are real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese rules aren\u2019t optional. Tenants deserve safe, well-kept homes, and we won\u2019t tolerate those who undermine that standard. We remain committed in our mission to enforce housing law and defend the rights of renters across the borough.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Council officers visited the property several times during autumn 2024 to gather evidence that the property was being rented by the room.<\/p>\n<p>A follow-up visit in November uncovered a tenancy agreement showing the property had been operating as an HMO since August 2023 and was not licensed.<\/p>\n<p>The level of fine issued was reflective of the size of the landlord\u2019s portfolio, their knowledge of the regulations given the fact that the other properties were already licensed under the council\u2019s scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The landlord settled the original fine of \u00a323,500 fine within 28 days of receiving the Final Notice, in doing so under the new policy he benefited from a 15% early payment discount.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A rogue landlord has been fined a total of \u00a319,975 for operating an unlicensed House in Multiple Occupation in Haringey.
