{"id":3950,"date":"2025-09-26T15:02:31","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T15:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=3950"},"modified":"2025-09-26T15:02:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T15:02:31","slug":"government-rakes-in-22-more-from-stamp-duty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=3950","title":{"rendered":"Government rakes in 22% more from stamp duty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stamp duty receipts rose by 22% to \u00a314.6 billion in the past 12 months, HMRC data shows.<\/p>\n<p>This represents an increase from \u00a312bn last year, and reflects how investors now have to pay a 5% surcharge on additional properties, up from 3% following last year\u2019s Autumn Budget<\/p>\n<p>Louis Alexander chief executive of specialist lender Somo, said: \u201cLandlords and investors are now contributing far more to stamp duty than before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith another Budget only weeks away, there is real uncertainty about what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government is considering reforming the system with fresh property taxes according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>One such idea is replacing stamp duty with an annual property tax charged on homes worth over \u00a3500,000, rather than paid upfront at purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Capital gain exemptions could also be introduced on the sale of high-value properties, which would leave investors facing large tax bills when disposing of assets.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander added: \u201cUncertainty over stamp duty risks paralysing investment.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stamp duty receipts rose by 22% to \u00a314.6 billion in the past 12 months, HMRC data shows.
