Chancellor Rachel Reeves has given a press conference to set \u201cthe context for the Budget\u201d, signalling that she is preparing the country for tax hikes.<\/p>\n

Speaking three weeks before the Autumn Budget announcement on November 26, Reeves pledged to make \u201cthe choices necessary to deliver strong foundations for the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

She noted that \u201cthe easy thing to do would be to cut investment\u201d, but those decisions \u201care the reason we have such low productivity today\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reeves accused Tory politicians of being \u201cirresponsible\u201d by pushing for \u201ceasy answers\u201d in the past, referring to administrations making spending cuts rather than raising taxes.<\/p>\n

The Labour Party had a pre-election manifesto promise not to increase not to increase income tax, national insurance or VAT, though Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to confirm the Budget will honour these pledges at Prime Minister\u2019s Questions last week.<\/p>\n

The Office for Budget Responsibility is expected to downgrade its productivity growth forecast for the UK by around 0.3%, which could bring Reeves\u2019 \u2018fiscal black hole\u2019 from \u00a322bn to up to \u00a330bn, according to Sky News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the property market speculated tax rises could come in the form of a Mansion Tax on properties worth over \u00a32 million.<\/p>\n

There is also talk of stamp duty being removed and replaced with a tax for properties over \u00a3500,000.<\/p>\n

Nathan Emerson, chief executive at Propertymark, said: \u201cWith increasing speculation about potential tax rises, it is crucial that careful consideration is given to avoid hampering growth within the housing market, as it is a central engine of the economy.<\/p>\n
