{"id":5708,"date":"2025-11-21T12:02:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T12:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=5708"},"modified":"2025-11-21T12:02:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T12:02:32","slug":"racial-segregation-in-chicago-worsened-by-private-listings-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=5708","title":{"rendered":"Racial segregation in Chicago worsened by private listings networks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Homes in predominantly white neighbourhoods in Chicago are being routinely listed on private agent networks \u2013 a phenomenon that\u2019s being blamed on amplifying inequality and segregation.<\/p>\n<p>Brokerages offer \u201cexclusive access\u201d to some homes on its listings network to entice new buyers.<\/p>\n<p>However, homes sold via the listings service Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED) are 2.2 times more likely to be in majority-white neighbourhoods than non-white, Zillow analysis shows.<\/p>\n<p>Orphe Divounguy, senior economist at Zillow, said: \u201cChicago shows what can happen when parts of the housing market move into the shadows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate marketing might sound appealing, but it risks deepening segregation and limiting opportunity, moving us further from the fair and open housing market consumers deserve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data show clear disparities, and good intentions are no longer an excuse for expanding digital redlining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In majority-white areas, 7.9% of homes for sale within MRED were listed privately, compared to 3.4% in non-white regions.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Chavarria, is executive director of the HOPE Fair Housing Center, which works to eliminate discrimination in housing across much of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p><!--   \t\t  \t\t\t \t\t\t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(\"div-gpt-ad-1715620536068-0\"); }); \t\t\t  \t\t  \t -->  \t <\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201c57 years after the Fair Housing Act promised an end to housing segregation, we are still waiting for that promise to be fulfilled,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZillow\u2019s decision to confront the data and its calls for the real estate community to open listings to all consumers is an example the industry must follow. Homebuyers deserve the right to see all the homes available in an area \u2014 not to have those choices quietly made for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A study by a University of North Carolina professor described how private listings unintentionally reinforce racial segregation, exactly what Zillow\u2019s analysis sees playing out in Chicago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edge.prnewswire.com\/c\/link\/?t=0&#038;l=en&#038;o=4563353-1&#038;h=4280654052&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fscholars.org%2Fcontribution%2Fhow-americas-real-estate-brokers-still-use&#038;a=Elizabeth+Korver-Glenn+wrote\">Elizabeth Korver-Glenn, assistant professor of Sociology<\/a>, wrote: \u201cI learned that the real estate agents tap their social networks as primary tools for generating business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause those networks are racially structured, white real estate agents end up working primarily with white home buyers and sellers, while Black and Latino agents deal with more diverse sets of clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause white agents\u2019 networks are overwhelmingly comprised of other whites, this means that Asian, Black and Latino consumers are disproportionately excluded from finding out about informally listed homes for sale handled by white agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Korver-Glenn wrote that private listings are \u201ca prime example of a practice that legislators [who are] committed to interrupting stubbornly persistent racial segregation in housing markets can and should target.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Homes in predominantly white neighbourhoods in Chicago are being routinely listed on private agent networks \u2013 a phenomenon that\u2019s being blamed on amplifying inequality and segregation.
