Reform UK has announced plans to repeal the Renters\u2019 Rights Act if elected, prompting immediate criticism from tenant advocacy groups and housing organisations.<\/p>\n
The party\u2019s UK business spokesperson Richard Tice outlined the policy during a speech in Birmingham, stating that a future Reform government would introduce a \u201cgreat repeal act\u201d to remove what he termed \u201cdaft\u201d regulations, including recent tenancy reforms.<\/p>\n
Tice argued that the Renters\u2019 Rights Act had made renting property \u201ctoo risky\u201d for landlords, claiming that many had decided to exit the market due to concerns about regaining possession of their properties. He suggested the legislation was reducing supply and contributing to rent increases.<\/p>\n
Ben Twomey, Chief Executive of Generation Rent, responded to the announcement, stating: \u201cForcing people back into insecure and unsafe homes is not a promise, it\u2019s a threat levelled at England\u2019s 11 million private renters.\u201d He described the proposal as \u201cdisgraceful\u201d and said it would be \u201ca gift to unscrupulous landlords\u201d. Twomey criticised Reform for not engaging with renter groups during the legislation\u2019s passage through Parliament.<\/p>\n

Sarah Elliott, Chief Executive of Shelter, said scrapping the reforms would leave families trapped in an unfair system and give landlords \u201cfree rein to turf renters out of their homes for no good reason\u201d.<\/p>\n
Clara Collingwood, Interim Director at the Renters\u2019 Reform Coalition, described removing the protections as a \u201chuge setback for millions of renters\u201d, while Unison General Secretary Andrea Egan called the proposal \u201ca huge mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n
