{"id":975,"date":"2025-07-01T01:05:48","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T01:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=975"},"modified":"2025-07-01T01:05:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T01:05:48","slug":"former-scottish-steelworks-could-become-major-data-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/second-home.uk\/?p=975","title":{"rendered":"Former Scottish Steelworks could become major data centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former steel mill could be redeveloped into one of the UK\u2019s largest green AI data centres, under a proposal from developer Apatura Energy.<\/p>\n<p>The Ravenscraig site could develop a major data centre with battery energy storage on 160 acres at the post-industrial site, located in central Scotland, less than 20km east of Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Apatura put forward Ravenscraig as a candidate in the UK Government\u2019s AI Growth Zone initiative which is now under consideration by the Department for Science, Innovation &#038; Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The process is designed to identify the very best sites in Britain in what is becoming a global race for AI supremacy. The site has not yet been selected, and the bid remains under.<\/p>\n<p>Giles Hanglin, chief executive of Apatura, said: \u201cThis proposal plays strongly to Scotland\u2019s strengths \u2013 in green energy, in AI, in education and in skills \u2013 and would complement the country\u2019s significant capabilities in big data and research.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve secured the land and grid, and we\u2019re already working closely with relevant organisations locally and nationally to make sure the benefits are widely felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we were selected as an AI Growth Zone it would be a significant endorsement of our ambition to make Scotland a powerhouse of green, AI-enabled digital infrastructure \u2013 starting with Ravenscraig and extending across the central belt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The area would bringing more than 2000 new jobs and an estimated \u00a33.9 billion capital investment, Apatura claimed.
